Who is at risk for developing mesothelioma?
Anyone who has been exposed to asbestos is at risk for mesothelioma. In general, the more exposure to asbestos, the higher the risk is of developing mesothelioma. Most people who develop mesothelioma are exposed to asbestos at work. Some people have close relatives that worked with asbestos and brought it home on their clothes. Others lived in areas where asbestos is mined or processed. There are some people who have no known asbestos exposure who get mesothelioma. They may have been exposed and did not know it. Or there may be some other risk factors, such as genetics, that doctors are beginning to look for.
