What equipment is used to deliver radiation?

There are a number of different machines that can deliver the radiation needed to treat your mesothelioma. The actual machine will depend on what your hospital has. The different kinds of machines are getting better at focusing the radiation as close to the tumor as possible.

Some hospitals use a linear accelerator to deliver radiation. Many big hospitals and mesothelioma treatment centers have Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).

This is a type of three-dimensional therapy which can focus the x-ray beams even more narrowly. Other new machines include three-dimension conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) and helical tomotherapy.
