Phagocytosis

Phagocytes are a kind of white blood cell. There are three types of phagocytes, called monocytes, macrophages and neutrophils. They are able to envelop and kill material foreign to the body, such as bacteria, and also destroy cells that are dead. Phagocytosis is the process by which any of these cells envelop and destroy unwanted cells or substances. Phagocytes are part of the immune system.
