IMRT (INTENSITY MODULATED RADIATION THERAPY)

Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is a type of radiation therapy that minimizes damage to non-cancerous cells near the tumor to be treated. Using computer-generated images, a 3-dimensional representation of the tumor, which includes the shape and size of the cancer, is obtained. The machine is then able to project very thin radiation beams into the tumor from a variety of angles. The strength (intensity) of the beams can also be changed as necessary to protect healthy tissue.IMRT can be used for external radiation therapy in patients with mesothelioma. Most cancer centers and large hospitals have these machines.
