Gene Therapy

Genes are the basic blueprints of all cells, made out of DNA. Some cancers are thought to be direct expressions of abnormal genes. The abnormal genes can be caused by damage to the DNA, or in some cases, people can be born with gene abnormalities that cause cancer to develop. If damaged genes could be repaired, that might cure cancer.Gene therapy involves replacing abnormal genes with normal ones, which can be accomplished by a virus or a protein.

Australia has the highest rates of mesothelioma in the world. Researchers in Australia are looking at a new technology called comparative genomic rehabilitation (CGH) technology to see if it can help treat mesothelioma.

Gene therapy is still a new technology which may hold promise for the future but has not yet been able to help patients with mesothelioma.
