What can I do to make the most possible out of my doctor visits?
There are a number of things you can do to get the most out of your doctor visits. Most of this is true whether or not you are seeing the doctor about your mesothelioma or anything else. Of course, if you are talking about cancer, you are naturally going to have a different reaction than if you were seeing the doctor for your high blood pressure.
First of all, be ready with all of your own information. Bring a list of all the medications you take, a list of your medical problems, and any surgery you have had. If you know about mesothelioma exposure, tell your doctor about it. If you have copies of your records, your lab tests, x-rays or scans, bring all of them. You may wind up seeing a lot of doctors, and the more they know, the more they can help you.
Bring a list of your questions. Write questions down whenever they occur to you. Ask the doctor your questions.
Bring someone along with you. You will probably feel better with a family member or friend at your side. They may be able to help remember what the doctor has told you. They may remember to ask something you forget. Or they may just give you support.
If things are not clear to you, ask where you can get more information. The doctor may have handouts. There may be educators at the facility that can help you. There are websites with information about mesothelioma, cancer, and many of the things you need to learn about. Ask the doctor where he or she thinks the best information can be found.
Ask the doctor what to do if you need help outside of office hours. Be sure you know who you need to contact and how. This may change depending on where you are in the process of diagnosis and treatment.
Make sure you have gotten all the prescriptions you need before you leave.
Make your next appointment before you leave. Once you get home you can start writing down questions again.
